MEXICO CITY— Pablo Ruíz Nápoles — a handsome guy with long hair that curls at the ends, and rimless glasses — looks like a director in Mexico’s film industry more than the economist he is. Professor Ruíz is one of Mexico’s experts on how the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA, has affected his country.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It’s a barrio with no redeeming grace. Rusty railroad tracks run alongside a garbage-strewn knoll. Paint-stained day laborers mill around waiting to be picked up.

Journalists Aren’t Vigilantes,
So Why Do They Talk Like Them?

Column No. 4235 HISPANIC LINK 05/21/06 Column 1

President Bush is criticized by some when he states a truism: "Immigrants are hard-working, decent human beings." The peaceful demonstrations of millions of immigrants bear out his claim and speak to their devotion to the United States. Their marches were so splashed with the Stars and Stripes that they resembled majestic Fourth of July parades.

He was 33 years old, had a newborn baby boy when he left, another son about 4 years old, three stepchildren and a wife who was crazy about him.

In the early 1970s I served on an advisory committee to the United States Census Bureau. Our committee advised the bureau on how to count undocumented persons in the 1980 census count. Much rides on an accurate count, including the number of congressional members each state receives.

Earlier this month, HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson shared a political morality lesson with a Dallas audience at a forum sponsored by the Real Estate Executive Council, a national consortium.
