Away for the Winter

Most Every Little Event
L.S. Indio, Age 17. Bell Multicultural High School, Washington, DC

I love the way you tug your hair
when you think I'm unaware.
I love it when you laugh and sigh;
when the color changes in your eye.
I love the way you play and sing
and every other little thing.
I love you with my heart so deeply
and yet, I cannot show my feelings.

Why am I so weak and timid?
Maybe it's because amid
all my other fears I fear
yo will not thin of me so dear.
And my pride these fears do tent,
But the fact remains, my dear,
for most every little event
I wish you were near.

Freedom is This
L.S. Indio, Age 17. Bell Multicultural High School, Washington, DC

Freedom Is This:

The ABILITY to go to the cushy chair.
The RIGHT to grow out your hair.
The POWER to show that you are smart.
The STRENGTH to show what's in your heart.

   Freedom Is This:

The CHANCE to fail or to succeed.
The OPPORTUNITY, your case, to plead.
The CHOICE to stay or to go.
The TIME to learn and to know.

   Freed is this...

Away for the Winter

The days are cold, the nights are colder.
I can't wait 'til the babies are older
and wiser for going through the pain
to know the winter is coming again.

I am a bird away for the winter.
The snow cools my fathers, the season's so bitter.

Baby birdies are hungry, upside down is their world
and the food, I fear, is already squirreled
away for the winter I do decree,
is the best place to be, you see.

I am a bird away for the winter.
The snow cools my feathers, the season's so bitter.

I dream of the springtime so warm and lovely,
yakking all day is what I will be
doing all through spring and summer days,
until the warm months no longer stay.
